Interac e-Transfers are one of the fastest and easiest ways to move money between accounts, whether you’re sending funds to a friend or receiving money from another financial institution. This guide walks you through exactly how to send, receive, request, and manage e-Transfers using our Online Banking System.
What You Need to Know First
Before getting started, it helps to understand a few key terms that will come up when sending or receiving an e-transfer:
- Payee: The person you’re sending money to.
- Auto-deposit: Automatically deposits funds into an account, no security question needed.
- Security question & answer: Used when auto-deposit isn’t set up; the recipient must answer correctly to receive funds.
- Financial Institution (FI): The bank or credit union involved (e.g., Luminus, RBC, TD).
Sending e-Transfers
From Luminus to Another Financial Institution
If the recipient does NOT have auto-deposit
- Log in to Luminus Online Banking
- Go to Transfers
- Select Interac e-Transfer → Send Money
- Add a new contact using their email address
- Create a security question and answer
- Enter the amount and send
What happens next:
- The recipient gets an email notification
- They choose the financial institution they would like to deposit their funds to
- They answer the security question to deposit the funds
If the recipient DOES have auto-deposit
Follow the same steps, except no security question is required. The money is deposited automatically into their account shortly after being sent.
Receiving e-Transfers
From Another Financial Institution to Luminus
If YOU do NOT have auto-deposit set up:
- The sender creates a transfer and security question
- You receive an email notification
- Click the link and choose Luminus Financial
- Answer the security question with the answer the sender has provided you
- Complete the deposit
If your email is set up for auto-deposit with Luminus:
- The money goes directly into your account
- No action required to complete the e-transfer
What If Auto-Deposit Is Linked Elsewhere?
If your email is linked to a different financial institution with auto-deposit, you won’t receive funds directly in Luminus. Instead, you can request the money.
Requesting Money (From Any FI)
You can request money anytime through Luminus:
- Log in to Luminus Online Banking
- Go to Transfers → Request Money
- Add or select a contact
- Enter the amount
- Send the request
The sender will:
- Receive an email
- Log in to their bank
- Complete the transfer
Once the sender completes it, the funds are deposited accordingly.
Cancelling or Resending an e-Transfer
Need to make a change? You can manage pending transfers easily:
- Log in to Luminus Online Banking
- Go to Transfers → Send Money
- Select Pending
- Choose:
- Cancel to stop the transfer
- Remind/Resend Notice to notify the recipient again
⚠️ Important: Once a transfer is accepted (or auto-deposited), it cannot be reversed.

- Double-check the recipient’s email address before sending to ensure the money is going to the correct person
- Use clear, memorable security questions
- Share the answer securely (not in the memo that goes with the transfer)
