What started as a cooperative built on mutual support has grown through innovation, partnerships, and mergers with like-minded credit unions. Over the decades, we have expanded our services and strengthened our ability to serve diverse communities throughout Ontario.
In 2010, Starnews Credit Union received open bond status, enabling it to welcome individuals, families, and organizations from across the province. Soon after, we launched a new identity, Luminus Financial, reflecting our vision to bring clarity, opportunity, and better banking experiences to our members.
Today, Luminus Financial continues to build on that founding spirit of cooperation, helping members achieve their financial goals while supporting the communities we serve.
Starnews Credit Union receives its charter, founded by Toronto Star employees seeking fair and accessible financial services.
Our “What Can We Do for You?” recruitment campaign earns the Image Enhancement Golden Mirror Award from the Credit Union Executives Society.
A transformational year:
Starnews becomes an open bond credit union, allowing membership across Ontario.
Campbells Employees’ (Toronto) Credit Union and Air Toronto Credit Union join the organization.
Food Family Credit Union joins Luminus Financial.
The Luminus Financial brand is officially launched, promising members “Clearly better banking.”
Luminus receives the AIME Award for Achievement in Marketing Excellence from the Marketing Association for Credit Unions.
Honourable Mention at the Central 1 inNOVAtion Awards.
Luminus is invited to address executives from Latin American credit unions through the World Council of Credit Unions, sharing insights on innovative financial services.
Launch of the Remit Now, Pay Later Program, supporting the Filipino community in Ontario and helping increase Filipino membership by 10%.
Opening of the innovative Financial Hub at 1 Yonge Street in downtown Toronto.
Through partnerships with Sun Life Financial and Interchange Financial, the hub offers wealth management, insurance services, and access to more than 70 foreign currencies.
The Remit Now, Pay Later initiative earns the Concentra emPOWERING Your Communities Award for its impact in the Filipino community.
Luminus receives the Laserfiche “Run Smarter” Award for Best Human Resources Initiative.
